: The antenna on my '87 635 just quit going up and down last weekend. I pulled the antenna, a Hirschman by the way, and verified that all internals were intact and there were no mechanical problems. I applied 12v. to the motor and it goes up and down OK. When I turn the radio on I get a signal from what I think is the amplifier mounted in the rear well.
: I checked the small fuse in the unit and it appears to be OK.

Tom, if you have a unit with the toothed antenna mast, something that helped in diagnosing mine was looking at the e24 FAQ and then checking the Antenna World website to identify a small roller wheel that helps the mast extend and retract. If your unit is still getting power (you can hear the motor do its work when you turn your radio on/off) then this message probably applies to you. Per the FAQ, I identified my Hirschmann as the Auta 6000 EL model. There is an exploded diagram of all its parts on the Antenna World website under the older Mercedes section. The culprit part was 4.11 (tension roller). Unfortunately, Antenna World has the worst response to sales inquiries (none by phone or e-mail) so you'll have to find another source for the parts. Hirschmann itself can be reached at (800)225-0524, don't know if they sell direct though. Hope this helps somewhat. Another alternative is to shell out some cash for a used unit from a totalled 6. Good luck.
Chris
