In Reply to: Steering Wheel Reconditioning? posted by Scott on April 21, 2000 at 23:58:47:

: Has anyone attempted to recondition or restore their steering wheel? Mine appears to be leather wrapped and happens to have most of the finish coming off from years of use. Thanks!

I bought a leather kit for about $16 that was sized for my wheel and was pre-punched for the lacing thread every 1/8" along.

It took about 2 hours-plus using a baseball stitch and two needles and the wheel looks brand new. It help a LOT to soak the leather for about an hour in warm water prior to the lacing (they didn't suggest that in the instructions). It allows the leather to stretch easily while doing the lacing, then shrink perfectly when dry.

I've had folks ask where they can get theirs done because it came out so well. I don't offer to do it, as the thread cuts have just healed from doing mine!!

Wear leather gloves when doing the lacing so you can pull it tight without bloodshed.
