Eugene, the mechanic, who moved here 5 years ago from germany (who also drives a 6) found the alternator bushings very coroded, pushing the alternator pulley out of alignment, to the point that my belts were being damaged. The car has 79,000 miles and is 13 years old. It doesnt surprise me that they coroded.

Maybe the process of unbolting and retightening things under the hood restored a ground that was bad and causing problems.
