on 1984 AC has about 20 inputs. First Does it feel like the temp adjustment knob is working? it has a u-joint connecting it to the reostat. this u joint is known to break. I would check the fuse and swap for another of the same amperage. Some inputs in no particular order are engine temp, outside air temp, high pressure, low pressure, oil temp in compressor, evaporator icing sensor, condensor temp, cabin temp, fan speed switch,
What I would do is next time it will not engage is jumper the compressor clutch and see if the clutch is good. Sounds to me like it may be a intermitent bad ground or bad conneticon to a sensor.
