Thanks Bob, it was the ICM, the cable was loose. I was able to get the idle down to around 1000-1100. I also shot a tiny squirt of lithium grease into the IVC. Maybe this weekend I'll get brave again and try to get it down to 850.

: The ICV just gets a wild hair and is jumpy sometimes. BMWNA says not to try the cleaning routine as it can screw up the valve, but I haven't seen this myself.
: Check the connection at the ICV, too, by wiggling the 2 conductor plug. I've seen these have just enough corrosion to make the valve seem intermittant.
: You might also try wiggling the ICM above the glove box to see if there's a bad connection there, too.
