SHIFTER POPPED OUT OF TRANNY!!!!!!!! (archive)

Last night coming off the expressway, i reached for the shifter to down shift from 5th and to my suprise, the shifter had separated itself from the tranny! In other words, the car was still in 5th but the shifter was flopping around from side to side! When i pulled the shifter boot away i found that the mine has the set up where my shifter comes off by removing a retaining ring with a pair of needle nose pliers then the shifter itself comes out. But the retain ring is still intact! Has anyone had this problem? Please, dont tell I'M screwed as the trans is now shot! Despreately looking for answers!
