Sounds like the bottom of the shifter lever may have come off the shift linkage, which you can confirm from the underside of the car. The retaining ring only holds the lever in place; it doesn't have any bearing on whether the lever is actually attached to the shift rod.

If you get the car up on blocks or ramps you should have a pretty clear view of what's going on underneath. If the lever is still attached to the rod, then your problem is internal to the tranny.

: Last night coming off the expressway, i reached for the shifter to down shift from 5th and to my suprise, the shifter had separated itself from the tranny! In other words, the car was still in 5th but the shifter was flopping around from side to side! When i pulled the shifter boot away i found that the mine has the set up where my shifter comes off by removing a retaining ring with a pair of needle nose pliers then the shifter itself comes out. But the retain ring is still intact! Has anyone had this problem? Please, dont tell I'M screwed as the trans is now shot! Despreately looking for answers!
