It may not necessarily be a conversion. BMW made an M645 is 1984 & 1985 with the V-8, 4.5 liter. Was available in Germany only, with or without turbo. I know, I used to own one when I lived there in the 80s. The German autos mags called it the "Porsche Killer," and it was, able to pass anything on the autobahn except a gas station.
These cars were never imported into the U.S., and certification cost (back then) over $20k. So I sold mine to my cousin when I moved back to the U.S. He still has it.
The car was and is an E24, but has the flashing M645 on the grill and trunk lid, and 645CSI on the toolbox in the trunk deck.
I don't know of any "conversions" if the Bimmer to which you are referring isn't one of these beasts.
