I don't think you need them unless you go to really wide wheels. I have 16X7" BBS RA wheels on my 79 and 16X8" BBS RS on my 86 and they all fit within the wheelwells.

The previous post mentions the extensions the Euro M635s had. I think they give you about an inch to an inch and a half more coverage.
