I'd say that this is somewhat true.. The early euro 635's ran the standard single cam M30 motor w/9.3:1 compression and 272 cam they pumped out about 218hp (later US cars 188). They also used the Bosch L-jet fuel system which is reliable although not possible to have a "chip upgrade" as the later motronic cars. Simple adjustable electronic ignition system (from 77-81) with NO motronic sensors in the bellhousing to screw with.
But being a lighter car(no US emission crap and lighter bumpers etc, 200 lb less) they are much quicker, handle better and can surprise many a standard US M5/M6 owner with their abilities.
Their main weaknesses??
Brake upgrades are few or non existant for the E12 chassised cars <1981.(unless you go the Alpina way for $$). They have a mechanical speedometer (which is good I think) and NO Si board to burn out like the later cars. The CR dog leg tranny of the early 635 has gotten a rep for not being as durable as the later 280 style in the later cars., but I have had no problems with the (4) that I own.
As for the M635/M6 well... they are in a different league due to the M88 engine in the car. These cars will take more maintaince to keep in top condition and ultimately cost more as well.
