In Reply to: Power Steering Fluid Changing Instructions Help... posted by Todd on May 20, 2000 at 18:17:54:

Just did this job, and it worked out OK. Used Dextron II automatic transmission fluid, as I think this was called up in owners manual and Chiltons. (Type F probably works OK too, but call up is Dextron). I think it used a little over a liter.

Couple of tips.

Remove the screen circlip and screen. The next circlip has a spring under it, so try to retain the spring when removing; it can really fly. Changing and reinstalling filter is very straight forward.

There is a disc in there that is a bit of a pain to get out as it sticks in the central rod; bit fussy but easy.

Turkey baster seems to be drain of choice and works well. You have to pump the brakes about 20 times with the car off to "drain" all the fluid back into the reservoir. Suck out old fluid thoroughly and clean reservoir.

Don't overfill with fluid! Start car and run the steering pump and brakes, cycle steering, pump brakes. Shut off and pump 20 times. Level will come up significantly. Check level when brakes are hard and level stable.

Level moves about the depth of the top screen, so it is a bit tricky to gauge level with the screen in place.

Don't get too worried if you spill fluid after the job, probably just overfilled (as posted below).

Hope this helps

Stu

Check you have the right filter; there is one for ZF system and one for Benteler. Manufacturer should be indicated on the top of the steering box.
