: Hello, fellow bmw freaks
: I need your opinions on the best gear oil for my 87 M6 transmission. I am rebuilding this week, just got all the parts. The 3rd to 4th gear fork was worn out. Which is better, synthetic or mineral gear oils, and what name brands.

: thanks
: Ted

I suggest you stick with the BMW Fluid Specification of petroleum ATF Dextron.
I tried to use Redline synthetic MTL with the recommendation of Redline. After a short period of use gear clashes started during down-shifts into third and second. Occasionally during up-shifts. I then switched to their synthetic ATF. Then, the transmission became difficult to engage first gear from clutch depression and the gear clashes continued. This is the symptom of a transmission fluid that was to slippery for the synchros.
I re-installed petroleum ATF Dextron III and the ease of engagement returned to normal and gear clashes stopped within 2-3K miles.
Win some loose some.
