I agree that the 89 is the model to buy mainly because of the newer engine with more horsepower and the better proportioned bumpers. The years are 88/89 however. The only change from 88 to 89 is the fact that they offered a CD player as an option. Also, the newer, the less prone to rust. Ussually from 86 on the don't rust as much.
Good luck, you are definetly getting the right car. Don't try to save on maintanence, if you service a 6er the way you are supposed to, it will be cheaper in the long run.
