: I repaired this problem on some comfort seats some time back on an '87 635. I am having dificulty remembering the procedure to remove the seat back, but I do remember it being a little difficult. Perhaps someone else could help on this.

: As I recall, I had to gently pry the seat back over top of the seat release on one side; easier if you pull the lever into the release position, but easy to break the backing material. The plastic knob pulls off, but this is difficult as well.

: The cog devices at the side of the seats are prone to failure. When you get in there, you will see they are a soft metal gear activated by a worm gear. If one cable is not properly engaging due to the 'stretching' problem, the gears can get ground up. The seat not moving on one side indicates the cable is not turning the worm gear, so the recliner gear is locked against the worm. I was lucky enough to find replacements from trashed seats at a wrecker.

: Removal of the recliner mechinism is very straight forward though; three small bolts hold them in place. You may not even have to remove the seat back to get into these; I can't remember for sure. They are under the plastic covers at the base of the seat. You may be able to get the system moving again with the 'coathanger rice grain' method at the actuator end, without removing the seat back.

: Check over your cables carefully on both sides prior to assembly. I went the speedo cable shop replacement route, but the cables themselves are pretty reasonably priced at the dealer (found this out after).
