85 635-no response when throttle floored (archive)

This is my only drivabilty problem to date. When driving fron a red light I many times experience a slow response as if there is fuel starvation, a 3-5 second flat spot in which there is no response and then whamo! the power comes on. The odd thing is that it occurs intermittingly.Some days worse than other.If it was a clogged fuel filter wouldnt it be always occuring. It just feels as though the car is at 80-85% at freeway speed as well as street. There is no 'missing' when throttled but many times when coming to a stop it will idle very rough for about 5 seconds then it smooths out. Could it be AFM or what.THanx for any help on the matter.John 85 635csi. 125k miles
