Tach delayed start (archive)

When I start my car, the tachometer (and mpg indicator) stay dead for about 15-30 seconds, then jump to life (sometimes the tach is wildly erratic for a few seconds before calming down). The delay is shorter if the car is warm. Any suggestions as to what this could be? Thanks.
