first, they were used instesd of cat.converters since the engine was made to run on leaded gas, however, the thermals produced so much heat, they would regularly crack the heads. If you remove the reactors, you don't have to install a cat. unless (possibily) California. My 77 runs straight to the resonator&muffler and even after 370k(by est.now)miles, it still passes N.Y.state stringient emmisions very easily and is exempt of having to run on the dynometer due to the year(1977). So no, you don't need to do anything else then swap the reactor for a standard manifold or upgrade to Stahl Headers. I would have the head examined for cracks around the exhaust ports though.
