Sounds like mold to me. I would buy some A/C treatment spray. I used some from Wurth. Sprayed it in the fresh air fans under the hood below the winshield and also in the air intake under the radio with the A/C on. Solved my problem.

: The bad smell was not unlike an oil spill on a hot muffler. The "cat" was leaking so removed it and replaced with straight pipe. Appeared some better. Now with warm damp weather and air-conditioning on a bad smell has returned. Could this be mould? Car sat for two years under canvas before I picked it up in Napa Valley.
