tranny fluid change... (archive)

Going to change the tranny fluid in my 85. I have a manual transmission, but heard from a friend that I need to put automatic fluid in the car. Is this so? If yes, which brand, type, grade do you recommend. I would like to get something in there that lubricates well, the car has 242,000 kms and shifting is rough for a few minutes after driving. I hear Mobil 1 is good? Suggestions.
