Help! major problems (archive)

y car, which I have driven around for the past year has suddenly gotten very sick. It was running fine last night but when I went to go somewhere this morning started out not feeling right, slow acceleration, hard - funny steering, next battery light went on, next overheating.
SO current symptoms are that the car is steadily rising in temperature to the red within 2 miles, battery symbol light is on, and very rapid idle. The first thing I looked for was a broken belt but the look fine. Help - any ideas what it could be.
