My 85 M635 makes the same rattling noise in neutral, clutch released. How loud is your rattle? I just bought mine, it was quiet when I bought it, now it's rather noticable. Anyways, I checked with my contacts in town, and they said it's most likely the Redline in the gearbox, which is a lighter oil as a result of its desirable higher boiling point. The only people who said it's a real problem in the clutch were... you guessed it... the local BMW dealer technicians who wanted to sell a new throw out bearing for 700 bucks. Well, mine's been replaced on a full overhaul only 19k miles ago, I doubt it's a throw out, so I'm assuming it's the Redline in the box until it really clatters in there.
BUT... I would certainly appreciate anyone else's information, especially if someone knows I'm blindly walking toward a snakepit of mechanical woes.

: Car (88 M6) drives beautifully now (new radiator, thermostat, AFM, FPR), but has a sort of "rattling" noise when I let off the clutch. It seems pretty harmless, just very annoying. My mechanic says something about using a different gear oil (synthetic?) but didn't really touch on it (he and I both agree I need other things first). However, I would like to make sure this isn't a serious problem, and also like to see how much I'm looking at to fix it in the future (what the heck is it?)

: Thanks!
