I believe the 7 series up until 1982 model year had the grill of the 6 series, then in 1983 they changed to the bigger kidneys, smooth turn signals, and no chrome on the bottom of the grille as the 6ers have. Also in 83, the nose of the six became a little smoother, but it's really hard to find much difference. I think the difference is in the center above the kidneys; old 6ers have a more pronounced mid-section than the later ones which are somewhat smaller.

: While on my way to go jet skiing in the delaware river near Stockton, NJ, I passed a body shop with what a thought was a black 633CSi sitting in the front parking lot. I was interested because the 6ers are rare around here, yet this one had the exact same 17" BBS RC wheels that 635 has. So I stopped for a closer look, and found FOUR doors. This was a 733i! However, the section of the body in front of the hood was replaced with that of a 6er. The center kidney grilles and the side grills/headlight assembly were from a 6er. Everything from that section back (hood, everything else)was from a standard 7. I don't like the normal front of the 7er from that time, but this 733 looked wonderful. That guy knows what he's doing. He's got the look of a 6, but the practicality of a 7!!
