My friend had an 88 M5 that did the same thing, but only with less than 1/2 tank...it turned out to be the pre-pump. We replaced it and it has been fine. The pre-pump is the one inside the tank, it's not to hard to replace. The car will run with a bad one, but it puts extra stress on it. Good luck.
