There are 2 plastic connectors...one for the reference sensor and the other for the speed sensor. If I remember correctly, the gray connector is for the reference sensor while the black one is for the speed sensor. Do you remember which one you fixed?? I've heard (but never tried it) that the car can literally run just fine without the speed sensor, but I know that it will not run without the reference sensor. I don't believe you did any damage to the Motronic unit. Neither do I belive that it has anything to do with your rough idle when connected. Again this sensor provides TDC info to the Motronic. You may want to test both sensors and make sure they are within spec. I'll see if I can dig up the spec info for you.
