The BMW ZF tranny is a HOT topic of debate. I had an 87 L6 with an abused tranny. My older 86 had a perfect tranny, and I know for a fact it was serviced well, as well as NEVER RUN IN MANUAL MODE. The manual mode was VERY over-used in most 6 cars, and was NOT intended to be driven like a 4 speed. Simply driving the car for an hour should hint whether the tranny is ok or not. If it "clunks" when shifting, BEWARE. If it is smooth like a new car, you are lucky enough to have found a good one! I like my M6, because it is manual. No fun in a traffic jam, though!!!
