My other saga in the garage at the moment is that I'm replacing the shift linkage in my '83 633csi. I've got the main shifter part out (upper and lower with ball), and the two circlips on the selector rod off, but I'm curious - do I *have* to drop the driveshaft and exhaust in order to get the spring sleeve and cylindrical pin out of the selector rod joint? It seems next to impossible to do this without getting something out of the way...I'm just trying to see what's going to be the least trouble to get out of the way now that I have the front of the car up on ramps...
I read the tips on the FAQ for this procedure...but from reading some other descriptions of the project, I wasn't convinced that the driveshaft/trans/muffler all needed to be dropped or removed..
