Rear Brake Lights and Shifter (archive)

She is a 1984 633Csi(U.S.) and the brake lights are inop. The Cruise Control has also gone south, but that is possibly tied in I've heard. The bulbs are fine. I've orderd the switch at the brake pedal, but am not sure this will fix the problem. Any other routes?
Also, it has become very difficult to shift into 2nd and 4th gears, requiring (shamefully) some force. I hate doing this, but she has to be a daily driver. The situation is slowly deteriorating. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
