In Reply to: Did It - 02 short shift installed - tips posted by Dan P on August 19, 2000 at 21:36:37:

Just installed the 02 lower shift stub (74 02 part # 25 11 1 205 870) Ordered from Rocky Mountain - was backordered 1 month. If you order from Rocky Mountain, save 1/2 shipping by using mail order .vs. on line. Don't know why, but true. Part was 25.

Made a BIG diiference. About 40% (maybe more?) in throw.

It took longer than I thought. Why?
1) The electrical connection by the rubber boot wouldn't come apart. Took about 20 minutes to pry it loose.
2) Removing the clip from under was a snap(right there- nothing to remove), but getting the rod pin from the stub apart took about 30 minutes. Per the factory manual, I tried to remove the nut for the mounting plate to allow a bit more room. But that was a PIA. Just fiddled with shifter in different gears (reverse first, then forth) - finally it was free. But I was covered with grease. Add 10 minutes for clean up.
3) Okay, the upper/lower shifter can now be pulled out. But getting that circlip out on the upper (to separate the two parts)was tought. A dart tip was the most useful tool I could find. Problem was that circlip was just a piece of wire (didn't have the hole for circlip pliers). Took about 30 minutes. PIA!
4) Read & study the diagram for how the upper/lower pieces fit together (refer to BCG post - they post the same diagram as the factory manual). Get all pieces in the right order before you install the new lower 02 stub/ old 6-er upper.

I didn't get new ball cap shape bushings (23 41 1 444110) - just used the old with new grease. Tighted things up just fine. But for 3 bucks I probably should have replaced those any way.

Bottom line - the trick works! Throw is reduced alot due to 02 ball to connector being longer (about 1/2 - 3/4 inch)than stock.

Well worth the 30 bucks.
