I did manage to get thespring sleeve, pin, and selector rod joint out of my '83 533i a few weeks ago - I dropped the back of the trans down by pulling the two nuts on the rear trans support shaft. I had tried repeatedly before discovering that a small shirt pocket type screwdriver would go into the top of the pin opening and hook the spring clip so it could be pulled to the rear. I was fortunate and the pin basically fell out after that. If it hadn't I can't imagine being able to drive it out with the drive shaft in place. It is smart to be sure the pin is rust free and shiny clean before attempting reassembly - you do NOT want it stuck mostly, but not all the way, in.HTH Oregon Tom
My other saga in the garage at the moment is that I'm replacing the shift linkage in my '83 633csi. I've got the main shifter part out (upper and lower with ball), and the two circlips on the selector rod off, but I'm curious - do I *have* to drop the driveshaft and exhaust in order to get the spring sleeve and cylindrical pin out of the selector rod joint? It seems next to impossible to do this without getting something out of the way...I'm just trying to see what's going to be the least trouble to get out of the way now that I have the front of the car up on ramps...
I read the tips on the FAQ for this procedure...but from reading some other descriptions of the project, I wasn't convinced that the driveshaft/trans/muffler all needed to be dropped or removed..
Pete
