Ron, it's usually easier to put it in the main line from the alternator to the battery- this will show alternator output but not how much is actually going into the battery(as opposed to running lights, etc.) If you want that, you have to intercept the car's main power line (everything connected to the battery + terminal, EXCEPT the starter) and that can be a little tougher.
Most cars use the first method, I believe.
