By running full-range speakers on your rear deck, you are bringing the stereo image too far behind the listener. The rear speakers sit closer to the ears than the fronts. This does not "degrade" sound quality, as the rear speakers still sound fine, it simply pulls the natural stereo image away from front. Of course, simply fading the rears away a bit creates the illusion of more distance, and allows the driver to hear the kick speakers (which, admittedly are not optimally placed in an E24). I have built custom pods in my L6, and they required no cutting. They sit at your ANKLES, and angle UP and IN, facing the opposite sides (right speaker points towards drivers ear, vise-versa).

As a "true" audiophile, or at least, as close as to one I care to become (real audiophiles are quite eccentric, yes?), I have found (as have scientists such as Richard Clark, owner of Autosound 2000, author of a monthly newsletter on the the physics of stereo sound in the automobile, and retired #1 Sound Q Expert Class IASCA Pro), that the kick panel is the optimal location for speakers in a car. Used in the manner described above, the differences in path-length between the left and right speakers to the listeners' ears is minimized. This creates a near perfect image dead-center in the car. As for the door speaker location, the speakers are too far off axis to the near listener to provide the prober image/soundstageing.

Don't get me strted on rear treble!
