Rob, take a penknife and scrape the battery posts and the inside of the cable clamps, until they are shiny bright- then try again. Often a very stubborn oxide(sulfide?) forms here and gives all kinds of starting/charging problems.

I just bought a 1986 635csi. Because it had not been driven daily, the battery went dead and I replaced it. It started fine that day but when I went to crank it up the next morning, all I heard was clicking. The wierd part is: 1) the battery is fully charged, 2)battery cable is good. The clicking seems to be coming from a "black box" forward of the brake master cylinder. I've tried everything!!! Is this a case of the starter failing by coincidence?
Anything I may have missed?
Thanks.
Rob
