My 87 L6 has been shutting down while driving and I dont know the problem. It then has trouble starting up after shutting down. COuld this be a fuel problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just purchased a L6 doing a similar thing. Ex-owner spent over $2500 to try and get fixed. No success. After 10 minutes diagnostic work, the additional small wires attched to the positive battry cables were loose. I disassembled and found "arcing" signs on the wires where attached to the positive cable end. Cleaned the connections, tighten screw snugly and the car runs better than ever before
Cheap and dirty fix, try it out
The engine run relay may most likely be the culprit - you should always carry a spare and test it first.
As with most relays, it may work fine at first and fail later when a heavy load is applied or will function unreliably. This is the most valuable $30 towing insurance you'll every purchase when owning a 6-series!
