Had a similar problem with another German car. I removed the lower transmission pan and valve body (not too difficult) to expose the clutch packs that others are mentioning. I found that a small piece of broken snap ring was preventing the reverse clutch bands from disengaging--effectively forcing the car to be locked in reverse even if forward gears were selected. Removing the debris fixed the problem 100%. 50,000 miles later the transmission is still performing like new.
