I took the info from the BMW Enthusiasts Companion. Upon closer inspection, the pin numbers given were for the 87 & newer layout. Though my M5 is an 88 it has the older layout. The new one has 20 pins, the old style has 15.

The new style connector uses pins 7 & 19 for SI reset, the old style uses 1 & 7.

I purchased the reset tool from Peake Research. Makes it easy.
