I have a '86 CSI with 130k, CAT is hollow. Many times when I shift gears at medium to low rpm's I get a backfire or "pop" back through the exhaust. It is never more than one single pop. Everytning else seems fine with the engine and FI system. Has anyone else had or solved this problem?

Bob,
I just recently experienced the exact problem on my '87 635csi. The cat started to break up internally so I hollowed it out as you have done and then I also noticed the 'pop'. I did a post on this board previously and got no replies at all.
The exhaust at rear is a 2 yr. old B&B unit and all was good there. Last week I installed a set of headers to eliminate the whole damn thing and also improve performance slightly. Works and sounds like a dream!!!
I wasn't about to put out $400 for a new cat and down pipes only to have it happen again. The headers were approx.$550 from Bavarian Autosport and they fit perfectly. Now I'll never have to worry about that cat again!
Go for it, you'll like it!
Good Luck,

Tom M.
