I have had some similar issues with my car dying...turned out the be a fuel line problem (pre-pump failing), but one suggestion I got was to check all the electrical connections before I let someone replace my alternator. Check connections on battery, starter and fusebus. If something is loose, while you are driving, the connection gets lost or bounced around and the whole system looses the charge, and your alternator can't keep up.

Good luck,
Michelle
