Prospecive e24 driver (archive)

I have recently decided to venture into the e24 world. I have been an avid driver, and repairer, of an 83' 733i but have always preferred the design of the 6-series. Could anyone please provide some advice on what to look for, or avoid. I'll be looking for something under $5000 just as soon as I sell me e23.
