I have the smae problem with my clutch it goes to the floor, then i pull it up and it works fine. let me know what you find out. I replaced the master and slave cyclinder abut 2000 mile ago.
i'm certainly no expert, but it sounds like your slave cylinder has gone the way of the wind. i replaced mine after a close call at a tollbooth on the dreaded nj turnpike: same thing, clutch refused to pop back up, so i couldn't get it into gear. eventually, it came around, but i didn't want to risk another calamity. mechanic i trust said they are ripe for failure at or around my mileage -- 160K. regarding that whine? maybe you just need power steering fluid. i've had the same problem in both my 6 and 3, and new fluid fixed the problem. i can't see how this prob is related to your clutch woes. again, though, i am no expert. perhaps somebody else has a diff't view.herb

Went to back out of my driveway and couldn't get OUT of reverse. Seems like some sort of pressure loss in the pedal. The power steering whined noticeably when I turned right, also.
I had the clutch replaced 1 year ago, maybe 20,000 miles on it. The car had been sitting for 2.5 months until 2 days ago, if that helps.
Any help appreciated!
