Recently purchased a 1983 633csi with 100k miles. The car is a beautiful black with a recardo type seats in great condition. I had my mechanic check it out before I bought it and he told me it needed valve stems- the plugs were oil fouled and lower control bushings and front struts. He also told me that he could change the valve stems for about $375 w/o removing the head. Can that be done? Also, should I replace the trust bushings with BMW 750i ones while I am at it. Thanks in advance for your responses.

I do not know how he plans to change the seals, given the head design, without pulling the head.

A new head gasket and a good look-see of the rockers (esp their hardened pads) is never a bad idea, anyway at 100K. Good chance to check the valve stem-to-guide clearance, relap the valves into their seats, etc..

On the bushings, I like the poly bushings, but the 750 ones ate good if you narrow them by 4mm or so. You might try dropping them, cleaning the rubber with spray brake cleaner, then filling them with GE RTV silicone or Flexthane (I saw this stuff mentioned on one of teh boards). It takes days to fully cure, but it's a cheap DIY fix that might work as well. You can drive the car onto ramps, drop the rear of the thrust arms and do it in place. Worth a try for a few bucks.
