I am getting ready to buy a Getrag 260 to install in my '77 630 CSi, as my 4-speed expired. Who can tell me once and for all if I am making a mistake to go with the 260 instead of the 265. Believe it's out of an '83, and has around 80k miles on it. Have heard 260's are weak compared to 265.

The 265 is indeed the stronger transmission. It does not have an integral bell housing, so you would need to acquire it with the trans. The problem lies in the length. However, since you are switching from a fourspeed, you will need to change your driveshaft as well. Get that from the donor car with the trans or from any five speed E12 or 85' E28/E24. The 260 may also have no provision for a speedo drive, where the early 265 will. Of course you shift linkage will be different as well.
