Milage is always a factor in value. See a lawyer. If you can establish through records at your state department of motor vehicles that the milage was altered during the last owners watch you may be able to bring a claim against him. Many States will access treble damages ( 3x your loss )and maybe punitive damages for this type of conduct. Some States will also require that your attorneys fees be paid by the seller if you prevail. People who do this crap deserve to be made miserable. Good luck.

my '85 635 had more miles on it before I bought it two years ago. I ran Carfax last night, and in 1997 it had 170K. When I bought it in 1998 it only had about 120K.. So... there is a good chance the previous owner changed the mileage I think the cluster was swapped. This means my car likely has about 210K actual miles. I plan on letting Carfax know but since it's a 1985 it's exempt from mileage reporting. Will this effect the resale value? I would advise anyone buying to use Carfax.
