Being a old BMW lover, I remember my first 2002 BMW, I always had trouble putting it in to first gear while stopped or on cold mornings. I got in the habit of down shifting from 2nd to 1st gear and had no problem after that. I remember complainting to an old BMW mechanic about this and got a long explanation of contant mesh gears, syncho ramping gear speed, in short reverse and first are lowest gears and the tranny main and secondary shafts have to synchonize to engage them. Going from 2nd to 1st makes it easier to synchonize, try doing this before spending money that may not solve your complaint. Ted 740i 87 ///m6 84 533i
I have an 89 635 5 sp that I recently picked up. I'm finding that at times I'm having to "work" the shifter into 1st gear. I have to giggle the stick and use a little force sometimes. I can slide into the other gears smoothly. Is this a transmission issue or a shifter issue. I was thinking about putting a shot shifter in anyway. Thanks in advance for your input.
