Sorry to come to this discussion late. I have an '88 M6 which has about 100k on it. I replaced the shifter with a UUC short-shift kit and while the throw was reduced, shifting effort is increased and a marked difficulty in getting into 1st gear. I called UUC and they advised that short shift kits tend to amplify transmission problems (getting into first with difficulty can be a wear indicator), so be prepared for even more effort to get into first!
I employ the shift into first while coming to a stop but this is not practical in long waits at stop signs with the clutch pressure an M6 requires. My '89 535 also has the UUC shift kit (car has 130k on it) and it shifts much easier into 1st. Could be nature of transmission on sixes as they get older. It keeps my wife and daughter away from driving the 6, so maybe its a Darwinian feature!

I have an 89 635 5 sp that I recently picked up. I'm finding that at times I'm having to "work" the shifter into 1st gear. I have to giggle the stick and use a little force sometimes. I can slide into the other gears smoothly. Is this a transmission issue or a shifter issue. I was thinking about putting a shot shifter in anyway. Thanks in advance for your input.
