Well, yesterday I washed and polished the M6, ready to show off my new baby. Then for some reason I decided to try the OBC security system, which I had just learned about by reading the owner's manuel. I put in a code, then tried starting the car - of course it wouldn't start. I put in the correct code, and it started right up - Cool! So I put in a code again and put the car to bed for the night.
Today I got ready to leave for Harriman, turned on the key, punched in the code, and . . . the engine turned over but wouldn't start (just as if the code had not been entered or had been entered incorrectly). But the "----code" had cleared, and the clock was showing the correct time, so the code WAS cleared and it SHOULD'VE started. But NOOOOOO. I re-entered the code, and tried all the other stuff you would normally try (e.g., re-entered a different code, and then cleared it), but no luck.
A panic call to the local BMW dealer, and the service guy (there on Saturday at noon - amazing!) said the only two things to try were (1) tap the fuel pump relay to free it if it was stuck, and (2) disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, which clears the entire OBC (which it did) and then connect it and try to start the car. I also checked fuse #11, which I learned from a post in the archives is the fuel pump relay fuse. (In fact I checked ALL the fuses, and tapped ALL the relays). Well . . . no go.
So I'm sitting here writing this f. . .king post instead of hanging with fellow Sixers at Harriman, and the service tech says I'll have to have the car towed to the dealer on Monday.
Anybody got any suggestions for other things to try before I give it to the dealer? I gather that the security system (immobilizer) works by shutting down power to the fuel pump Should I replace the fuel pump relay just in case . . .
Man am I disappointed!!! Well, I hope that everyone who made it to Harriman had a great time. I'd love to see some pics. I'll be there next time - I promise!
