Here's a archive mail from BCG list:
Hope this helps,

which engine do you mean? The M60 V8 engines have 3.5/4.0L displacement,
the Motorsport S38 inline 6 with 24 valves has 3.5/3.6/3.8L resp.

For a swap, I=B4d recommend the last version of the S38 with 3.8L/340 hp
from an E-34 M5 (Euro specs) including the drivetrain with 6-speed
manual. This engine is still based on the M30 and should fit into the
engine bay without too many mods. =

Other than that, the V8/V12 engines already use a CAN-bus for
communication between the various control units
(engine/transmission/traction) and also for communication with the
instrument cluster/check control module. V12 also needs an electronic
accelerator pedal (no mechanical connection). =

This means many mods/upgrades in the wiring harness and eventually
software changes in order to get everything working together. The same
is true for the 400hp V8 engine from an E39 based M5 (current model).

An M30 based S38 still has a stand-alone ECU without any bus
communication (as far as I know), as there is no transmission or
traction control (has the 6-speed and a LSD instead).

Check http://www.bmwm5.com/ for details on this engine.

This is just a suggestion, I didn=B4t do any of this before!
