Recently I talked with a guy who runs a BMW shop in the Pacific Northwest. I asked the best way to get a 3.5 or M engine for my E9, and he suggested going to dealers' auctions back east (i.e. Toronto, Buffalo, Michigan etc)--anywhere with lots of snow and salt on the roads. He said you can sometimes pick up running cars with good engines and trannys, just lots of rust, for as little as $500. The more rust the better. He said he does this whenever he goes back east. College kids drive the cars back to the west coast for the cost of gas, and the good parts are harvested and sold.

Highly original, and definitely worth a look.
