The reason why the timing is set by Motorsport the way it is has far more to do with U.S. emissions and fuel grades (octane and detonation issues) than optimizing performance. BMW has to tune for the car for the lowest common denominator.

I have the Dinan chip and cam gear in my 1988 ///M6 and it is not only faster all around including higher top speed (I was clocked at 162 mph at the Silver State Classic a few years back), but the low end and mid-range torque has increased significantly!!!. The car is far more drivable (not less). Oh yeah, it spanks my 98 M3 in a drag race - how many stock M6s will do that?

BTW, I have never had any problems passing stringent California smog tests.

What is the trade-off (there is always one)? You must always use premium fuel, which is pushing $2.00 a gallon here in Los Angeles. If your car is a daily driver - mine is not - it can get very expensive!!
