With the fuel pump relay hot wires (30/87 connected together w/ the relay removed), and the injectors out of the manifold, move the fuel distributor flap from full closed to full open slowly. The amount of fuel should go from nothing to very heavy spray and back again. You say the piston is free, but it is possible that just because the air flap is free, the plunger is NOT.

If it doesn't spray like indicated, the plunger IS stuck (varnish from old fuel). Take the top off the distributor (careful the plunger doesn't fall out-it may not be THAT stuck), and pull it out carefully with pliers (it's hard and won't scratch easily, but still use care). Spray some carb cleaner up in there to disolve any gum, and replace the plunger. Move it until it's free and falls of it's own weight.

Reassemble and try it.

Gravity and fuel pressure should return it to closed if you move the air flap open, BTW.

The CIS system is purely mechanical and the amount of fuel is proportional to the fuel pressure and the plunger position (which exposes varying portions of fuel slits to the injector lines), so if the plunger is returning to closed, fuel cannot be expelled

I'm trying to get the motor running on a '79 323i that's been sitting for some time. When the fuel pump is on, the injectors spray fuel like there's no tomorrow! They spray in a nice mist, but they seem to spray WAY too much fuel. I haven't checked any fuel pressure but the piston in the fuel distributor moves freely. Any suggestions?
