Clicking sound on deceleration (archive)

Just started happening recently on my manual '85:
when I am decelerating in 3rd, but especially in 2nd or 1st, there is a clicking sound
from underneath the car near the rear. Sounds like its near where the driveshaft connects with the diff.
The weird part is that when I push in the clutch, the sound goes away. What's happening here?
Any help appreciated,
Chris
